Hey Joy Maxfield,
Interesting Post, Landscaping is a creative activity and provides an excellent platform for anyone overflowing with natural artistic juices. It is especially pleasing for those avid gardeners that truly want to display their inner talent and leave friends and family literally green with envy. Filling your garden with your own ideas and preferences can certainly work well after careful consideration and planning.

Congratulations to you for volunteering for your community! The first suggestion I would offer is that the Board consider adopting a "code of conduct" -- this will set forth the "ground rules" as to how the board will interact with each other and then it will be important to communicate "ground rules" to the membership as to how the business of the Association will be conducted. Generally speaking, owners should not offer comments throughout the board meeting except during the open forum. But it is important to set this standard and be consistent otherwise the cycle will continue. Most important piece of advice I could offer would be to ask questions, be thoughtful and be consistent. From the manager's perspective, the perceived lack of involvement could be as a result of the direction of the previous board of directors so it is always a good idea to give both the previous board and the manager the benefit of the doubt until you have enough information to determine otherwise. Good luck! Hope this information is helpful to you!

I was recently elected to the board of my condo. its a small condo, only 25 units, but i had no idea people at these meetings were so crazy. It makes me wonder what I signed up for. There's yelling, name calling, and disagreements everywhere. I want to make our building better but I have no idea where to start. On top of that, our property manager is clueless and doesn't do anything!

Be openminded about homeowners opinions and wants. They are the ones who ultimately pay the bills. You need to have a backbone of cast iron because as long as you give a homeonwer what they want they are fine. When you do not, look out as they will get all up in your face.

Internal audit and controls is very important to communicate to your residents. A couple ways to circulate the information is either in your newsletter, if your association does newsletters; a quarterly letter sent from the Board to the residents updating them of the financials, important tasks that the Board has accomplished and upcoming events in the community; association website, which is a secured sight that homeowners have to sign in with a password; and lastly, have a flyer printed of the information and distribute it to homeowners at your next annual meeting. I do agree with you, I wouldn’t recommend Facebook as a selected choice for this type of information to be shared.

This is all well & good but how do our BOD members communicate with the community? Please don't say "Facebook" as that takes a whole different slant on communication and management.
